About the Arts Covenant?
(aka: ArtsCov...for the hip at heart)

The Arts Covenant is a movement in CNY that calls upon everyone to support the rich cultural and artistic life of our community by commiting to four simple actions each year.

Why?

The arts reflect our roots, our complex history. The arts contributes to the quality of life in our community and to our economic survival and development. We need everyone who lives here to help sustain this extraordinary cultural life. Now is a time to support your neighbors.

How?

Commit to four simple acts over a year's time:

  1. Purchase three original works of art to honor the creative work of CNY artists.
  2. Attend at least one arts event from a culture other than your own to explore our community's diversity
  3. Attend one event in an art form you don't usually choose.
  4. Get involved. Support an arts institution you haven't supported before. For example: volunteer, take an arts course, join a story circle, a dance company or a chorus, become a sponsor or underwriter.

YOU decide how to keep your Arts Covenant agreement.

Sign-up for the Arts Covenant online or come to one of our events.

Why Covenant?

A covenant is more than a contract, stronger than a pact. It’s a deep, profound commitment among people who see themselves as community. They’re promising what they’ll do in the name of something they value. We talk about “civic engagement” and I think it ties into that. Sometimes it’s had some religious dimensions, harking back to the old and new covenants of the Bible. So it expresses a profound relationship with something higher, a spiritual aspect of our humanity that’s more than the everyday. It ramps up our thinking about the importance of art to a good life. At the same time it helps us target where we each decide to spend our money.

Who's behind the Arts Covenant?

Inspired by Mary Stanley's idea, an all volunteer working group called Arts Across Boarders has formed. Its members - artists, members of cultural institutions and arts allies - work to promote the idea.
